To lead effectively across continents, you have to stop trying to live in two time zones at once. That leads to burnout. Instead, we use a three-part scheduling framework:
1. The Deep Work Window (Your Local Morning)
When I am in Tokyo or Bali, my morning is the US “Night.” This is my most valuable time. There are no Slack notifications, no urgent emails, and no “emergency” meetings. This is when I do high-level strategy and creative work.
- The Result: 4 hours of uninterrupted focus before the West Coast even wakes up.
2. The “Hand-off” Hour
This is the overlap. Usually, my evening is the US morning. This is the only time I schedule “Live” meetings. We keep these tight and high-impact. I hand off the day’s strategy to my team, they execute while I am offline, and the cycle continues.
3. The Asynchronous Engine
If your business requires you to be “Live” to function, you don’t have a business; you have a job. We utilize Loom for video briefs and Asana/Notion for project tracking. I record my feedback during my day, and the team watches it during theirs.

Time Zones as a Competitive Advantage
By the time my US clients or partners wake up, I have already completed a full day of work. I am delivering results while they are still drinking their first cup of coffee. This “Global Lead Time” allows us to move faster than competitors who are restricted to a single 9-to-5 window.

There is a profound sense of peace in knowing your business is moving forward while you are out exploring the Shibuya Crossing or a temple in Kyoto. You aren’t “missing out”—you are presiding over a global empire.

- The World Clock Widget: Keep your team’s local time on your phone’s home screen to avoid “accidental” 3 AM pings.
- The “Clearance” Rule: Ensure every team member has enough “Asynchronous” work to last 24 hours so they never get stuck waiting for your approval.
- Health First: Never sacrifice your local sleep cycle to match a home-base time zone. Use the “Hand-off” hour instead.
